IVF, Fertility & Gynaecology Care in Sydney

North Shore Specialist Day Hospital provides a wide range of fertility treatments and gynaecology surgery in Sydney, and is owned by Virtus Health and fertility clinic IVF Australia.

Our facility is a centre of excellence in healthcare, going beyond Australian industry standards and providing clinical, laboratory and day surgery services all under one roof. This highly professional, efficient and unique centre has been built with the aim of making undergoing assisted reproductive therapy as convenient, and easy, as possible for our patients.

Gynaecology procedures

Our doctors have expertise in diagnosing and treating the symptoms of Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) and endometriosis, and this may involve laparoscopy surgery for diagnosis or management.

Fertility surgery

If you’ve been trying, unsuccessfully, to have a baby for more than 12 months (or six months if you’re over 35), your doctor may recommend further testing and fertility treatment.

Day surgery is often needed to investigate the causes of infertility, or treat problems that are making it difficult for you to conceive. These include:

  • Laparoscopy
  • Endometriosis treatment
  • PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome) treatment
  • Fallopian tubes surgery
  • Microsurgery

At North Shore Specialist Day Hospital our specialist surgeons include Australia’s leading experts in both male and female infertility issues.

What is IVF?

In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) gives many couples their best chance of falling pregnant, and is typically used to overcome some of the most common causes of infertility, including endometriosis, male infertility and unexplained infertility.

During IVF, a woman’s ovaries are stimulated to produce eggs that are collected by her fertility specialist during a simple procedure. They are then prepared and placed with sperm for fertilisation in a laboratory. The fertilised embryos grow over two to five days and are then transferred into the woman’s uterus in a simple embryo transfer procedure, similar in technique to a pap smear.

As a patient of IVFAustralia’s North Shore clinic your egg collection will be undertaken at North Shore Specialist Day Hospital, and your specialist appointments, blood and ultrasound monitoring and counselling services upstairs at IVF Australia’s north shore clinic in the same building. The embryology and andrology laboratories are also located onsite, providing convenience and supportive care throughout your IVF journey.

How long is the egg collection procedure?

It usually takes just 10 to 15 minutes. IVF scientists are in theatre with your fertility specialist, examining the follicular fluid for eggs immediately and then transporting them carefully to the laboratory upstairs for fertilisation. You will have a light general anaesthetic.

How will I feel after surgery?

You may have some cramping after the egg collection procedure. Your doctor or IVF specialist will meet with you afterwards, before you leave North Shore Day Hospital, and you’ll be advised of the number of eggs collected.
