Patient support after surgery

If you’re helping a friend or relative who is about to have a day surgery procedure at  the North Shore Specialist Day Hospital and you’re accompanying them to and from the day hospital, you’ll need to know what to expect. They will not be able to drive for at least 24 hours after surgery, and will need someone to look after them so they can rest, so it’s important you can take them home after their procedure and stay with them for a while – preferably overnight.

We will let you both know the expected discharge time on admission. We have a comfortable waiting room area next to the Day Surgery entrance on the ground floor, or you can spend some time at the local shops or cafes. It’s a short walk to Café Northside (2/2 Greenwich Rd) and the Sure Café in the Urban Hotel (194 Pacific Highway), or you can walk about 10mins toward St Leonards where there are many food outlets and cafes or drive to Crows Nest shops and cafes, or Chatswood Chase and Chatswood Westfield. Our Recovery Room staff will call you after the operation to confirm the anticipated discharge time.

After surgery, the patient will need to rest at home for the remainder of the day. Please stay with them to make sure they can. They should not plan to run errands or look after others on that day. If you have any concerns about their recovery after the procedure, please call their doctor immediately.
