Find out moreThe leading gastroenterologists at North Shore Specialist Day Hospital (NSSDH) specialise in diagnosing and treating diseases and disorders that affect the digestive system or gastrointestinal tract including irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), bowel and colon cancer, Crohn’s disease and coeliac disease.
Our gastroenterologists perform endoscopic procedures to examine the oesophagus, stomach and bowel using a long-specialised tube, with a lens on one end and video camera on the other.
At NSSDH we have a dedicated endoscopy theatre for our consultant gastroenterologists. The unit has the latest high definition Olympus scopes and monitors, with a range of interventional procedures available including the removal of difficult polyps by snare or by endoscopic muscosal resection (EMR) technique.
All our procedures meet the GENCA Guidelines for Infection Control in Endoscopy.
Endoscopes are reprocessed through an Automated Endoscope Reprocessor (AER).
A gastroscopy is a non-surgical procedure where a gastroscope, a long flexible tube with a light and tiny camera attached to it, is passed through the mouth and throat into the oesophagus and down into your stomach and duodenum, allowing your specialist to view your digestive tract. A gastroscopy is used to diagnose, ulcers, gastritis, digestive tract bleeding.
A Colonoscope is a tiny camera on a long flexible tube that is used to examine the entire length of the large bowel. The Colonoscope is inserted into your anus and extended up into your colon. The majority of colonoscopies are performed as part of screening programs for colon cancer. Other reasons include investigation of blood in the stool and abdominal pain.
An endoscopy is usually painless, with no scar or stitches. After 24 hours, you’ll most likely be able to resume your normal activities.
Your specialist can give you advice on what to expect during and after endoscopy. Please contact them immediately if you experience any pain or problems.
